It's been noted many times before that Cuba has a transportation crisis. Cars are very expensive, so most people simply either get around on foot, bike, or use cheap, communal taxis (taxis particulares). Public transportation, via buses, is severely overcrowded and undependable. Over the recent years, Cuba has tried to deal with these public transportation woes by importing more buses, particularly, older model school buses. It's a cheap fix and it does seem to be working.

This is the Chinese embassy, located in Vedado, at Calle 13 No. 551, Entre C Y D. It is a huge building, beautifully decorated and surrounded by a rather imposing wall. Havana is filled with foreign embassies. Most of them are located in the suburb of Miramar, but some are located in Vedado. The Chinese embassy is particularly important because China has been greatly increasing its investment in Cuba, which is directly leading to an improvement in the economy. China seems to recognize the significance and potential of the highly skilled and educated Cuban workforce, and want to make certain that they are clearly seen as an ally, ready to help in whatever way necessary. Over the last years, due to the growing ties between China and Cuba, tourism from China to Havana has increased dramatically. You will surely notice this on your trip to Havana. The two countries also has programs in place for university education exchanges. Cubans can complete a portion of their studies in China, and vice versa.

This is Miguel. He is an independent business owner in Vedado, Havana. He has set up shop, beside a school, and sells fried snacks to students. His prices are very low. Most of his products only cost 1 or 2 pesos (moneda nacional). Nevertheless, he is able to earn a salary which is well above average. Considering that he sells about 150 items per day, we can estimate that his daily revenue is about 10 CUC. That translates to a yearly revenue of over 2500 CUC. At a 50% profit margin, he is able to take home over 1000 CUC, after taxes. Miguel is a shining example of the opportunity for small business in Cuba. He works hard, but he is happy. He is almost 90 years old, but he still loves to get up every morning and work for himself and provide for his family. He is proud.

This is an older style state taxi in Cuba. As you can see from the photo, these taxis often require unscheduled maintenance. The drivers get to know these cars very well, and most minor repairs are done on the fly. These taxis are slow, bumpy, and they lack some of the creature comforts of modern vehicles, such as seat belts and air conditioning. But they are very popular. They are still expensive by local standards, but they are cheaper to use than the newer style state taxis. You can easily hail one of these cars and get a trip across town for about 5CUC or less.

This is a photo of a newer, state run taxi. 90% of the people who use these taxis are tourists. The other 10% are state workers who are using them on to travel for government business. Compared to other modes of transportation, these taxis are expensive. They cost at least 1CUC per kilometer of travel. It would be hard to get a trip across town for less than 5CUC. While, technically, all state taxis are the same, the drivers in these newer cars tend to charge a bit more than those who have older cars. But, at least with the newer cars there is air conditioning and perhaps more safety features.

Book Testimonials

I like urban exploration, so I was happy to learn about the “hidden” places to explore in Havana. I loved walking inside the abandoned buildings. No other guides explain how to do this. If you actually want to explore Cuba on your own, and learn about Cuban life, you need this guide. Books from Globe Trekker, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are pathetic in comparison.

The listings for the cheap casas particulares is awesome. I rented a large, private apartment, and it cost only $25 per night. I reserved the casa online and saved more than $10 per night. I avoided the hidden brokerage charges that other websites charge. Anyway, I saved a lot of money on a 10 day stay. Well worth the price of buying this book.
