Are There Bed Bugs In Cuba?

The quick answer in NO! And I’m not saying that just to comfort people. I am saying that because it is a fact. Bed bugs are not common in Cuba, and whether you stay in a casa particular or a hotel/resort, you are extremely unlikely to encounter them.

It’s important to remember that “Bed Bugs” is not a scientific term. The bug which is commonly called a beg bed is officially known as the Cimex lectularius. It is very rare in Cuba. Bed bugs do not live well in warm/ hot environments, so… they hate Cuba.

Finding Bugs in You Bed in Cuba?

But, there are other insects which can bite you while in bed, in Cuba. But these are rare too. Cuba has a massive, state funded fumigation program. Whether you are on a resort on living in a casa particular, your room will be fumigated every 2 weeks. This eliminates all bugs and flies.

The most common problem happens in casas particulares when owners cover the beds with plastic during fumigation. If you are there during the time of fumigation, just request that the mattress is stripped down and let the fumigation happen. This will ensure that any possible bugs in the mattress are killed. But as I mentioned, bugs which dwell in beds are mostly rare in Cuba.

Maybe Your Skin Is Just Dry?

One small thing to remember, after a day at the beach, you might go back to your hotel room and feel itchy when you get into bed. I see so many tourists complain about this. But really, in 99% of cases it has nothing to do with the bed or bugs at all. The itchiness might be caused by dry skin (being out in the sun all day), irritation from the chlorine in the pool, irritation from your suntan lotion, or perhaps an allergic reaction to the food.

Best Tip To Avoid Bugs in Cuba

One major thing to remember is, never bring food back to your hotel room. Most resorts in Cuba have a strict policy against this, but… we all cheat sometimes. You have to know that the policy is not because the hotel staff does not want to clean up crumbs in your room. It’s because the crumbs will get in your bed and could attract bugs! So, if you bring food back to your room, be careful with the crumbs, and, if possible, eat on the balcony, and not in bed.
