This is one of the best independent paladars in Vedado. It was opened in 2013, and is becoming an extremely popular place to eat and relax. Prices are very cheap. A whole meal, with a drink, can be had for less than 5CUC. It is located right beside a tranquil park, and it's open late every night. Unlike some indoor restaurant which can get very hot and stuffy on warm days, this palaradar is an open air restaurant. It's a great place to come for a casual evening. If it's raining, the owner just extends a large awning to cover the dining area. There is also a bar at this paladar which serves cheap drinks. Come for the food, stay for the drinks, that's my motto, and it's particularly fitting for this place. Some paladars in Havana have a reputation for being rather expensive. For the most part, when compared to state run restaurants, I would say that is a fitting characterization. But every once in a while, you can find a exception. In my opinion, if you have to dine anywhere in Vedado, you should definitely come to this location first. Want to find out where it is? Just buy the Real Havana Guide!

This is Miguel. He is an independent business owner in Vedado, Havana. He has set up shop, beside a school, and sells fried snacks to students. His prices are very low. Most of his products only cost 1 or 2 pesos (moneda nacional). Nevertheless, he is able to earn a salary which is well above average. Considering that he sells about 150 items per day, we can estimate that his daily revenue is about 10 CUC. That translates to a yearly revenue of over 2500 CUC. At a 50% profit margin, he is able to take home over 1000 CUC, after taxes. Miguel is a shining example of the opportunity for small business in Cuba. He works hard, but he is happy. He is almost 90 years old, but he still loves to get up every morning and work for himself and provide for his family. He is proud.

This is street side view of the Coppelia ice cream shop in Vedado. They serve the best and cheapest ice cream in Cuba. But there are long lineups to get in. These locals have probably been waiting in line for hours. But on a hot day, it's worth it. Scoops of ice cream only cost 1peso (Moneda Nacional). You can sit down and have as many as you want. It's a delicious, gluttonous experience.

La Coppelia ice cream shop in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana offers some of the best ice cream in Cuba at an extremely low price. Each scoop of ice cream only costs 1 peso (Moneda Nacional). That's the equivalent of about 4 cents USD. The ice cream is really good. It's cold, creamy and very sweet. The only problem is that this ice cream parlor is just too popular! Lineups to get in cant take hours and they snake around the whole block. My suggestion, wait for a cooler or rainy evening and then make your move. You might only have to wait 15 minutes, and you will taste the best ice cream Cuba has to offer.

Book Testimonials

I like urban exploration, so I was happy to learn about the “hidden” places to explore in Havana. I loved walking inside the abandoned buildings. No other guides explain how to do this. If you actually want to explore Cuba on your own, and learn about Cuban life, you need this guide. Books from Globe Trekker, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are pathetic in comparison.

The listings for the cheap casas particulares is awesome. I rented a large, private apartment, and it cost only $25 per night. I reserved the casa online and saved more than $10 per night. I avoided the hidden brokerage charges that other websites charge. Anyway, I saved a lot of money on a 10 day stay. Well worth the price of buying this book.
