This is the Turquino night club, located on the 25th floor of the Habana Libre Hotel. It doesn't look like much now, because it is during the day and the workers are just setting up the entertainment. At night, this becomes one of the top disco destinations in the city. Salsa music is played on many week days and live performances are common on weekends. The disco has windows all around any you get an unobstructed view of the whole city. There is even a retractable roof on the disco, which is opened on nice evening to offer an gorgeous view of the stars.

This is an older style state taxi in Cuba. As you can see from the photo, these taxis often require unscheduled maintenance. The drivers get to know these cars very well, and most minor repairs are done on the fly. These taxis are slow, bumpy, and they lack some of the creature comforts of modern vehicles, such as seat belts and air conditioning. But they are very popular. They are still expensive by local standards, but they are cheaper to use than the newer style state taxis. You can easily hail one of these cars and get a trip across town for about 5CUC or less.

La Coppelia ice cream shop in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana offers some of the best ice cream in Cuba at an extremely low price. Each scoop of ice cream only costs 1 peso (Moneda Nacional). That's the equivalent of about 4 cents USD. The ice cream is really good. It's cold, creamy and very sweet. The only problem is that this ice cream parlor is just too popular! Lineups to get in cant take hours and they snake around the whole block. My suggestion, wait for a cooler or rainy evening and then make your move. You might only have to wait 15 minutes, and you will taste the best ice cream Cuba has to offer.

Book Testimonials

I like urban exploration, so I was happy to learn about the “hidden” places to explore in Havana. I loved walking inside the abandoned buildings. No other guides explain how to do this. If you actually want to explore Cuba on your own, and learn about Cuban life, you need this guide. Books from Globe Trekker, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are pathetic in comparison.
Patrick Harper
The listings for the cheap casas particulares is awesome. I rented a large, private apartment, and it cost only $25 per night. I reserved the casa online and saved more than $10 per night. I avoided the hidden brokerage charges that other websites charge. Anyway, I saved a lot of money on a 10 day stay. Well worth the price of buying this book.
