Reach for the stars: A Cuban Rises to the Challenge

Felix Guariola wants to join the Guinness Book of Record for driving the highest bike in the world. To do so, he has created a bike that stands 18 feet tall.

Guariola is a Cuban who has a bicycle shop in Havana. A welder by profession he says that the idea of building the bike was born on the day he first saw a tandem bike, back in the 1983. Guariola was 19 and thought “I’ll invent a Giant bike… one that’s super high.”

He has since made three. A bicycle of 1.60 meters tall, another of 3.45 meters and finally his tallest, reaching 5.5 meters into the air (18 feet).

Canadian Terry Goertezen currently holds world record after traveling 300 meters on a bike that was 18 feet high in 2004. With a bit of practice, Guariola hopes to beat that record soon.

All the more reason to visit Havana and see him practice every day in front of the Capitol Building!
