Coffee in Cuba

Although coffee is not native to Cuba , has become indispensable among Cubans, and grown into an important part of their culture. For the vast majority of adults in this country , drinking a steaming cup of coffee, is one of the first actions of the day.

Coffee arrived in this island when the French immigrated to the easternmost region of Cuba , following the anti-slavery revolution that took place in Haiti in the late eighteenth century.

Where Coffee grows in Cuba

Generally , Cuban coffee is cultivated in the mountains of the island, about 500 to 800 meters above the sea. In parts of the Sierra Maestra, Escambray, and the mountains of Sagua-Baracoa , some of the largest crops are grown. In the center of the island, and Sierra del Rosario and the plantations in Pinar del Rio, coffee bean growing has become a huge part of the local culture.
